A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary in 1984, Gayle is a pastor and has served two churches in the Phoenix area – as an associate pastor at Scottsdale Presbyterian and then for 14 years as senior pastor of Historic First Presbyterian Church, in inner-city Phoenix. There she led the congregation to open its heart and ministry to some of the neediest in the city, caring for the homeless on a daily basis, as well as establishing Downtown Urban Community Kids (DUCK), a life-changing after school ministry for at-risk kids. During her tenure there, the church emerged from one that was aging and dying to a significantly younger and more ethnically diverse congregation. In December of 2002 she retired from her pastoral position and currently enjoys guest preaching and speaking at retreats and special events around the country, as well as interim pulpit supply/Session leadership. She teaches in the areas of preaching and communications at Fuller Theological Seminary Southwest and coaches public speakers on a one-to-one basis. Married for 28 years, she and her husband, Tom, have three wonderful sons: Luke, 23, Ben, 21 and Zach, 19. J. Herbert Nelson
As an extension to his community based ministry, Dr. Nelson is a co-founder of Southern Faith, Labor and Community Alliance. The organization was founded to link Christian Churches with active labor organizing in the south. Previously, he served as Associate Director of the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis. As a consultant, he provides staff development training for Teacher Specialists, Curriculum Specialists and Principal Leaders who provide assistance for low-performing schools. A third generation graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, (Presbyterian University founded in 1865) Nelson earned a B.A. in Political Science/Urban Studies in 1981. In 1985, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Johnson C. Smith Seminary (third generation graduate) at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. During his eleven year tenure as Pastor of St. James Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, North Carolina Nelson began the Doctor of Ministry Program at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. His dissertation, “A Community Based Model of An African American New Church Development In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Focused on the Educational Needs of Poor African American Children,” He graduated “With Distinction” in May 2002. J. Herbert as he is commonly known serves as preacher, workshop leader, consultant and writer. He is a featured conference preacher at Montreat, Mo Ranch and Massanetta Springs Conference Centers in the Presbyterian Church His writings have appeared in Presbyterians Today and The Outlook, He is a member of several boards and professional organizations. Nelson has traveled to South Africa (1983), Geneva, Switzerland (1992), Montego Bay, Jamaica (1993, 2007), and Havana, Cuba (1999 and 2000).
John Heeringa
Jon has been working
with youth in a variety of capacities and locations for over 15 years. Jon
loves to have fun and wants students to understand the joy and adventure of
life in Christ and his Church. Jon is an ordained Presbyterian pastor,
currently working with and loving the youth of First Presbyterian Church, of
Fort Collins, Colorado. Jon is married to the most wonderful woman in the
world, Pam and has two sons Ian, age 4 (at conference time) and Eric, age 2.
